Auto Accident

Auto Accidents

Being involved in an auto accident can be emotionally, psychologically, and physically traumatic. Even when the damage is less than severe, experiencing a car accident can be quite horrific. When dealing with the initial shock of an accident, it is easy to overlook the severity of physical damage. In fact, auto accident-related symptoms may not present themselves for several days after the accident occurs. If you have recently been involved in an auto accident, you may experience one or several of the following symptoms: Headaches, back pain, neck or shoulder pain, abdominal pain, issues with physical function, and even PTSD.

Symptoms of Auto Accident Injuries

Amongst the most common auto accident injuries are headaches, stiffness or pain in the neck and shoulders, and severe back pain. In many instances, headaches will develop several days after the accident took place. While symptoms of headaches may be tolerable, it is important that you have yourself checked out by a medical professional as quickly as possible. Headaches could indicate a more serious problem, such as blood clotting around or on the brain, a concussion, or serious injury to the neck (injury that could continuously worsen if not treated accordingly). Whiplash, or stiffness of the neck, is one of the most frequently reported symptoms of auto accident injury. While whiplash is common, it can still be serious. If you experience stiffness or pain in the neck or shoulders, seeking medical care will be necessary (and x-rays or MRIs may be required to adequately diagnose the issue). Finally, many individuals who are involved in auto accidents will experience severe back pain. It is important to have back pain professionally diagnosed, seeing as it could indicate damage to nerves within the spinal cord – maybe even damage to the vertebrae.

Treatment for Auto Accident Pain

If pain is mild to moderate and does not indicate a more serious injury, conservative treatments will likely be effective. Those suffering from accident-related pain may want to take several weeks of down-time and increased rest, and utilize over-the-counter pain medications and hot/cold compresses. If pain is more severe, or if pain indicates a more serious issue, more invasive treatment measures may be necessary. In many cases, MRIs, x-rays, and CT scans will be used to determine the source of the pain, and to diagnose any potentially serious issues. Once an issue is properly diagnosed, a team of experienced medical professionals will work together to determine the best course of treatment for your specific case.
